2001 Maxima A33 Ti - 196000klms. For some time now what I thought was road noise was quite evident. I have just rotated my tyres, front to rear, rear to front, and now I notice this noise is very severe and upon backoff, is evident down to road speed of 20kmh. The noise is road speed dependant, faster = noisier, slower = less noise. Noise does not worsen if direction is changed.
I have checked tyres (50% worn) for flat spots, bumps, etc, and all are OK in this area, as is balance. I have rotated all four hubs to check for rough wheel bearings and all appear to be OK.
I am now concerned that it may be differential bearings or differential centre assembly. Trans # finishes with FD4B. I do not know if this is Viscous Diff Centre.
Transmission performs beautifully, no problems at all.
I lifted the front wheels off the ground and rotated them in Drive. Unfortunately, it is not easy to get both wheels turning together due to brake drag. Applying light brake pressure seemed to cause noise and vibration from the diff area. ?????????????
Can someone please throw some light on this noise problem.
