I have a '98 SE 5spd 4wd, 141k miles. Recently started driving it again as my daily driver after having it sit for 5-6 years as our 3rd vehicle with only weekend use. I notice some hesitation (not smooth power) while accelerating, mostly when cold. Also seems to have less power than I recall it having in the past. Ran Techron fuel system cleaner through it on two successive tanks. Checked air filter (K&N drop in) and it looks reasonably clean. Plugs are NGK iridum (25-30k on them) and wires are replacement NGK. Cant remember if I replaced the dist cap/rotor. I did check plug gaps and found them all over 0.043, so I brought them all down to 0.043". Put the PCM into diagnostic mode and checked timing with a light (after warming up and revving to 2k, close to what the Haynes manual says). I was surprised that the timing marks seemed to drift/move around. I did my best to get it averaging at 15 deg BTDC, but to be honest, the marks were moving +/- 5 deg roughly. Is this normal? What could cause this? What could be causing the acceleration hesitation? MPG is as good as ever - recent all highway trip with lots of cargo still got 18mpg. Thanks for your thoughts.
