I purchased a used 07' Maxima SE back in October 2012 with 64k miles. It now has 68k on it, and ABS/Brake/trac control/slip lights are on. I had it towed to my nearest dealer (90 miles), they diagnosed the rear sensors had to be replaced. $960 later, i get the call that the ABS actuator is bad- and will be an additional $1600. When asked why they replaced the sensors, they said that the NIssan "flowchart" (REALLY??? a flowchart? what about diagnostic equipment to pin-point the problem??) states to replace those first and clean up the hubs, IF that does not fix it the actuator is shot. In the past couple days, I have been "enlightened" about this rather common problem with this issue. (hence, my first- AND LAST- Nissan)
Ok, so being somewhat mechanically inclined (I am a schoolbus mechanic), I have decided to change out the actuator myself. SO, I am in need of input from someone who had done this a time or 2 (or many more from the sounds of it!)
Should I get a new one, used one or rebuilt actuator? Any links to the rebuilt ones?
What are the tricks to removing this actuator? I see it on the firewall, Is there any tips to removing it? When I install the replacement, bleeding the brakes should be done with engine running or off?
Any helpful tips would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!
