Cat & O2 sensor & ECM question

Yes, more on that topic. I've seen many threads, but none worded exactly to give me the answer I'm looking for.

I have a 2005 Nissan Altima 2.5L, 120k miles, I am the 2nd owner of it. After reading numerous threads and chasing a P0420 code, I decided I am replacing both O2 sensors and the catalytic converter.

The question I have is that is it a must to pay the Nissan house to flash my ECM after the physical parts are replaced? Or, how do I know if the previous owner got this done or not?

Here's what I do know by checking my VIN, that I am indeed the 2nd owner, it was originally bought and maintained at the same Nissan dealer, and there are no outstanding recalls. Am I to assume, if there are no recalls to do, that they did flash the ECM already? I talked to them the other day, and they explained (same stuff read in threads how the ECM is expecting a higher reading from a sensor, yadda yadda) but didn't wanna check to see if it's been done, but will flash it for me for $107.

What happened to the days where you simply bolt on new part and be done. Is there any reason why I can't just do that and not mess with the ECM?
